The above procedure is the way 99 out of 100 would do it, if you are planning on showing the bike then: Put a replacement fuel line (purchased from a parts store) on the petcock, put it in a fuel can, turn the petcock to prime or reserve and drain the fuel, then remove the petcock assembly and the tank will lift straight up. I'm sure some residual fuel will spill so be prepared to clean it up, also I'm sure some will remain in the Right side of the tank unless you lean the bike over during the process or have it on the side stand.
